It was an honor to have collaborated with my fellow artists on this project. Donating "The Embroidery Tree" represents our gratitude to the emboridery industry for providing so many opportunities for our family and friends as they migrated into this country.
Union City Art Scene
Wednesday, May 28, 2014Embroidery Plaza Dedication Ceremony
(Union City, NJ) The City of Union City, Mayor Brian P. Stack & Board of Commissioners will hold a Dedication Ceremony for "Embroidery Plaza" on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 6:00 PM on New York Avenue between 30th & 31st Street in recognition of the many persons who worked in Union City in the flourishing embroidery industry. For many years Union City was widely known as the "Embroidery Capital of the World".
The Mayor and Commissioners will be present, as well as historical commentary by City Historian, Gerard Karabin, and Assistant Historian Jane Pedler. Classic cars will be on display, and several sculptures constructed from dismantled embroidery machinery will be unveiled. Following the ceremony there will be a performance by members of West Hudson Opera featuring John Jay Hebert, tenor; Iris Karlin, soprano; and David Maiullo on piano.
One of the sculptures being unveiled will be "The Embroidery Tree" which was originally displayed at the "First Lady Luncheon" on September 25, 2012 at the Pierre Hotel on 61st Street & 5th Avenue in NYC. It was designed by Amy Cheung with Henry & Adam Garcia of Marco Designs LLC, and painted by Aldo Sanchez "Zar". The sculptures are graciously being donated by the artists.
About the making of "The Embroidery Tree" Sculpture
Amy Cheung is a fashion designer. At the time she designed "The Embroidery Tree" she had been invited to display her work at various events throughout NYC. This particular event where the tree was displayed was the "First Lady Luncheon" in NYC in 2012. Amy wanted a unique tree which would bear the "fruits" of her work (shirts that rolled into its own pocket forming a ball). During this time Marco Designs LLC had obtained a property which contained four huge embroidery machines which were disassembled. Using the metal "I" beams the Garcia's cut and welded them together and Aldo Sanchez completed the work with colorful paint. More about Amy Cheung: http://www.handkerchief.com.hk/home
